CHAPTER 12

“But that afternoon he asked himself, with his infinite capacity for illusion, if such pitiless indifference might not be a subterfuge for hiding the torments of love.”

—Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The term subterfuge had various meanings in the back of my mind. One thing I’d come to realize is that I couldn’t handle betrayal of any kind. The fact that Brick had told Ivan about Walker’s true identity infuriated me to the point all I could think about was inflicting harsh punishment. While I’d understood from the beginning that my Capo had been loyal to Ivan for years, not only serving under the man’s leadership but being nurtured from nothing more than a grunt to a man garnering respect, that didn’t change the fact he’d made a mistake.

Maybe our friendship was nothing but a farce.

What I was forced to realize is that my quest to find the truth could mean that I was headed into treacherous waters, no longer able to count on Ivan or the majority of my soldiers to have my back. No one was going to go against the Bratva leader under any circumstances. His request to have her life ended had likely been turned into an edict. If I didn’t kill her, someone else would.

As I jumped into my car, I took a few seconds before starting the engine. Far too many things continued to trouble me. Finding the truth could disturb the makeup of the organization, which my instinct told me was the case. If so, then whatever choices I was forced to make could mean the end of my career.

Huffing, I turned over the engine, slamming the gear into drive. As soon as I rolled down the driveway, the sound of my phone pinging did little to calm my rage. “Brick,” I answered, roaring onto the street. I was ready to launch into him when I heard his heavy breathing. It sounded like he was outside.

“You need to get here as soon as possible!” he yelled, which was totally unlike his usual calm demeanor.

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

“I heard shots in the distance and went to investigate. Your house looks like a shooting gallery.”

His answer floored the fuck out of me. Who the hell would be so damn brazen? “And Walker?”

“So far, no one has found the playhouse,” he answered, his heavy breathing indicating he’d been running. “But there had to be a half dozen of the fuckers from the looks of it.”

“Then get her out the hell out of there.”

“Where the fuck am I supposed to go? I can’t tell if the assholes are still here.”

“Get to the park.”

“You’re serious?” he asked, taking gasping breaks. He was definitely outside by the noise in the background.

I’d used a certain park on two occasions. One for a drop-off. The second for a particularly nasty elimination. “Do as I say. I’ll meet you there in twenty minutes.”

“Okay, boss. Whatever you say.”

His hesitation was voiced in his tone, another aspect that angered me. However, at this point, I wasn’t going to make any rash judgments.
