~CHAPTER 12~

Anthony wasn’t getting anywhere. He’d had to go home and fix it with his boss about taking some time off. He’d had to admit that he was having family issues and that his wife had left him, taking his son. He didn’t want them to know his business, but it seemed to open a few doors with the others to know that he had a family. If he didn’t find Charlotte soon, he wouldn’t have one. The drive back across the country was making him exhausted. He pulled into Illinois on Thursday afternoon. It had taken him driving around the city for two hours trying to find something to eat to realize it was Thanksgiving Day and everything was closed down. He had to settle for a pizza and beer.

The beer hadn’t been bad, but the pizza was shit. He’d been half tempted to go to the pizza place and beat the shit out of the person who’d made his dinner. He knew that it wouldn’t do him any good so he stayed put. He had a long drive tomorrow and he didn’t have time to teach some moron a lesson. At least not this trip. Charlie blushed. She hadn’t even heard Damon leave this morning. He was gone when she got up and his pillow was cold, that’s all she knew. She pulled a glass from the cabinet and poured her own tea. Then she sat down next to Dane.

“What are your plans now that you and Damon are going to get married? I mean, are you going to work? You wouldn’t have to, by the way. The Grants are very wealthy. I’m not being nosey, just wondering for myself.”

“I hadn’t thought of it. I don’t…I guess if I did decide to go to work, it would be at the hospital somewhere. I know that I could get hired on. My grades were good. I’d just have to take my boards for Ohio. I hadn’t thought of it really, but I would work. Connor is my responsibly and I’d have to make sure he’s cared for.”

Charlie knew that Damon liked Connor, but he was her little boy. She needed to get him enrolled in school and then get him some clothes. Everyone had been very generous, but she needed to get on her own two feet. She was lost in thought when she heard the back door open and Jamie walked in.

“Hey, Charlie. Mom has decided that
