Chapter 10

Erick is standing guard outside the shower, while I wash the stink of steamer-trunk sweat and fear off my body. Knowing he’s only a door’s width away from my unclothed body, as I stand under the warm water and tenderly swish shampoo through my hair, is cause for a high level of preoccupation.

Not wanting to parade down the narrow passageway in a thin robe in the light of day, I chose to bring my change of clothing to the small shower stall.

Pre head injury, I could’ve managed with only minor difficulty, despite my clumsiness. However, now that my head is throbbing and my balance is tweaked, wedging myself into a clean pair of skinny jeans in such tight quarters is proving to be more difficult than fitting thirty-one clowns into a Volkswagen bug.

A light knocking at the door. “You okay in there? Sounds like a struggle.”

“Mind your own business, Sheriff. You’re supposed to be guarding the door, not taking notes for the Foley artist.”

He laughs louder than I would’ve expected. “That’s a good one. Not many times you get an opportunity to make a sound engineer joke.”

While I’m impressed with his knowledge of the filmmaking industry, I’m not about to let him get an upper hand. “It wasn’t a joke. Seriously, mind your own business. I’ll be out in a minute.”

He continues to chuckle at my predicament.

By the time I exit the facilities, my amused boyfriend has calmed himself, and I’ve come up with a plan of attack. “Why don’t you interview the railway employees while I walk through the coach-class cars to see if anything jumps out?”

Erick wipes a strand of damp hair from my forehead. “That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”

“Wait? What?”

“I don’t want anything jumping out at you. I think you’ve had enough excitement for one day.”

“I appreciate your concern, but you said it yourself. The clock is ticking. One of my hunches is probably about the only thing that can save us at this point. If we don’t figure out who the killer is before this train stops, the guilty party, and any remaining evidence, is going to walk right off this train and disappear.”

“I can’t argue with that, Moon. Stay in the bright, populated spaces. No more wandering off to the baggage car on your own. Deal?”

“Cross my heart and hope to—”

He presses a strong finger firmly over my lips. “I forbid you to finish that sentence.”

My eyebrows rise and I pull my head back. “Forbid me? You should know better than to forbid me anything at this point, Sheriff.”

He snickers, kisses me once, and shakes his head. “You’d think I would’ve learned my lesson, but it looks like I’m a glutton for punishment.”

“That sounds a little like an insult. You consider me a punishment?”

“No. Never. The punishment is the emotional turmoil that caring for an independent woman causes me on a near daily basis.”

“Oh, that. Well, you get what you pay for.”

He walks toward our compartment, and his broad shoulders shake with laughter. “I don’t know exactly what that means, but somehow it makes perfect sense.
