âMy thought for today is something which I found in Epicurus (yes, I actually make a practice of going over to the enemyâs camp â by way of reconnaissance, not as a deserter!). âA cheerful poverty,â he says, âis an honorable state.â But if it is cheerful it is not poverty at all. It is not the man who has too little who is poor, but the one who hankers after more. What difference does it make how much there is laid away in a manâs safe or in his barns, how many head of stock he grazes or how much capital he puts out at interest, if he is always after what is anotherâs and only counts what he has yet to get, never what he has already. You ask what is the proper limit to a personâs wealth? First, having what is essential, and second, having what is enough.â
Seneca, Letters From a Stoic[127]
âPeople who are physically ill are unhappy with a doctor who doesnât give them advice, because they think he has given up on them. Shouldnât we feel the same towards a philosopher â and assume that he has given up hope of our ever becoming rational â if he will no longer tell us what we need (but may not like) to hear?â
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations[128]
âThe best Armour of Old Age is a well spent life preceding it; a Life employed in the Pursuit of useful Knowledge, in honourable Actions and the Practice of Virtue; in which he who labours to improve himself from his Youth, will in Age reap the happiest Fruits of them; not only because these never leave a Man, not even in the extremest Old Age; but because a Conscience bearing Witness that our Life was well-spent, together with the Remembrance of past good Actions, yields an unspeakable Comfort to the Soulâ
Cicero, Letters[129]
âSo when you hear that even life and the like are indifferent, donât become apathetic; and by the same token, when youâre advised to care about them, donât become superficial and conceive a passion for externals.â
Marcus Aurelius, Meditation
âRemember that the divine order is intelligent and fundamentally good. Life is not a series of random, meaningless episodes, but an ordered, elegant whole that follows ultimately comprehensible laws.â
Epictetus, Discourses[130]
âPain too is just a scary mask: look under it and you will see. The body sometimes suffers, but relief is never far behind. And if that isnât good enough for you, the door stands open; otherwise put up with it. The door needs to stay open whatever the circumstances, with the result that our problems disappear.â
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
âDo not be whirled about, but in every movement have respect to justice, and on the occasion of every impression maintain the faculty of comprehension or understanding.â
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
âFrom the philosopher Catulus, never to be dismissive of a friend's accusation, even if it seems unreasonable, but to make every effort to restore the relationship to its normal condition.â
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
âSet aside a certain number of days, during
