Chapter 13
Damien looks relieved to see me. âCharlotte! Iâm so glad youâre here. Did Drew share anything new with you about Cody last night at dinner?â
âDid Drew share anything new with me? No.â At least that part really isnât a lie, I tell myself. âBut I think itâs time to tell him what you know about seeing Cody and Darla argue the day she was killed.â
He takes a deep breath. âYeah, youâre right. Itâs already bad enough that Cody lied about which day he was at the hardware store. I donât want Drew to think that you especially are keeping secrets from him, and I never should have put you in that position in the first place.â
âSay no more,â I tell him waving my hand around to dismiss any guilt feelings he has regarding me. âYour family is important to you, and you want to protect them. Iâm sure I would have done the same if I were in your shoes.
Thankfully, before he has the chance to ask too many more questions, the usual morning crush streams in, and it turns into an unusually busy day. The two of us are kept scrambling for hours trying to accommodate all the orders.
Then when all three of my furry little hooligans suddenly appear at my feet, I get nervous. âIf youâve found a dead body, I donât even want to know about it. Iâm serious.â
Of course, I say this out loud in front of several customers who all look up as if theyâre sure they didnât hear me correctly. And not only am I talking about finding a dead body, but Iâm also openly conversing with two rabbits and a cat. Itâs a wonder anyone in this town ever takes me seriously.
âThe lady in the coffee shop says youâre to come right over,â Marcus informs me.
âThe lady in the coffee shop is Miranda, and youâll have to tell her that weâre swamped right now, but Iâll be over as soon as I get the chance.â
Stumpy looks at me, confused. Right. I forgot. They canât talk back to Miranda; they can only relay her message to me. âIf I give you a note, will you make sure it gets to her?â
Marshall and Marcus laugh. âIf you give us a note, weâll just eat it,â Marshall reminds me. Then he looks at Stumpy as if heâs listening intensely. âNah, because weâll just take it from you too and eat it.â
âNever mind, Iâm sure Miranda will understand. If itâs that important, she can just come over here.â
âShe said if you tell us that youâre too busy, weâre supposed to tell you itâs urgent and that you need to come right over no matter what,â Marcus explains.
âUrgent? Is she okay? Is she hurt? Is someone robbing the store?â I try to peer over the heads of all the people in the café to see if I can spot something going on across the street. At least the shop isnât on fire or anything. I donât see people running from the store.
