Chapter 13

Damien looks relieved to see me. “Charlotte! I’m so glad you’re here. Did Drew share anything new with you about Cody last night at dinner?”

“Did Drew share anything new with me? No.” At least that part really isn’t a lie, I tell myself. “But I think it’s time to tell him what you know about seeing Cody and Darla argue the day she was killed.”

He takes a deep breath. “Yeah, you’re right. It’s already bad enough that Cody lied about which day he was at the hardware store. I don’t want Drew to think that you especially are keeping secrets from him, and I never should have put you in that position in the first place.”

“Say no more,” I tell him waving my hand around to dismiss any guilt feelings he has regarding me. “Your family is important to you, and you want to protect them. I’m sure I would have done the same if I were in your shoes.

Thankfully, before he has the chance to ask too many more questions, the usual morning crush streams in, and it turns into an unusually busy day. The two of us are kept scrambling for hours trying to accommodate all the orders.

Then when all three of my furry little hooligans suddenly appear at my feet, I get nervous. “If you’ve found a dead body, I don’t even want to know about it. I’m serious.”

Of course, I say this out loud in front of several customers who all look up as if they’re sure they didn’t hear me correctly. And not only am I talking about finding a dead body, but I’m also openly conversing with two rabbits and a cat. It’s a wonder anyone in this town ever takes me seriously.

“The lady in the coffee shop says you’re to come right over,” Marcus informs me.

“The lady in the coffee shop is Miranda, and you’ll have to tell her that we’re swamped right now, but I’ll be over as soon as I get the chance.”

Stumpy looks at me, confused. Right. I forgot. They can’t talk back to Miranda; they can only relay her message to me. “If I give you a note, will you make sure it gets to her?”

Marshall and Marcus laugh. “If you give us a note, we’ll just eat it,” Marshall reminds me. Then he looks at Stumpy as if he’s listening intensely. “Nah, because we’ll just take it from you too and eat it.”

“Never mind, I’m sure Miranda will understand. If it’s that important, she can just come over here.”

“She said if you tell us that you’re too busy, we’re supposed to tell you it’s urgent and that you need to come right over no matter what,” Marcus explains.

“Urgent? Is she okay? Is she hurt? Is someone robbing the store?” I try to peer over the heads of all the people in the café to see if I can spot something going on across the street. At least the shop isn’t on fire or anything. I don’t see people running from the store.
