If planning a prebaby vacation, the best time is early into the second trimester (the honeymoon period of the pregnancy). Make sure it’s a refundable trip or buy travel insurance just in case (check if pregnancy is insurable). Other things to keep in mind:

Keep the travel time less than a few hours. Sitting can be uncomfortable and may turn her mood south (even when driving east, west, or north).

If traveling by air late into the pregnancy (within a couple weeks of the due date), a doctor’s letter might be required to board the plane.

Always check with your care provider before making any travel plans.

If driving, make sure the seat belt never goes over her belly—always low across her pelvic bone. Plan for a lot of stopping and anticipate pregnancy gas (see Tip #36).

If going on a cruise, check the rules and regulations. Some cruise lines don’t allow pregnant women beyond their 26th week on board. Bring a letter from the doctor just in case. Avoid first-trimester sailing—motion sickness plus morning sickness makes for a messy cabin.

If traveling out of the country, check your health insurance plan to see if you’re covered. If not, buy more insurance or change your destination.

No drinking water at exotic ports of call outside the United States.

If sitting for several hours, encourage her to walk around. Leg cramps, leg pain, and blood clots are possible complications.

Consider getting travel insurance just in case she doesn’t feel well enough to go (pregnant women can be unpredictable).
