AFTER ALL THAT, Jonathan, Russell, and me caught a taxi, missed the 10:39, and waited a half hour for the 11:10 train back to Middleton. It was a horrible end to the night. Russell wasn’t talking to Jonathan or me, and I was too pissed off to play peacekeeper. Truth was, I didn’t feel like having a conversation with either of them. We’d gone out to have a fun night, and they’d all ruined it with plain stupidity.

When the train finally came, we sat down in separate aisles. We deboarded at Middleton and walked back to campus single file. At the gates, the security officer had us sign in and made a phone call to our dorm head, Mr. Ruskin, who had to let us in since they locked up the hall at eleven thirty.

Mr. Ruskin met us at the door in his night robe and slippers and was none too pleased. I didn’t care at that point. I let him have his say, and none of us made any excuses. There’d be disciplinary action, he said, and then he asked about Dale. Russell said we’d lost track of him, but he’d be sure to be coming along. Mr. Ruskin was right miffed about that, but given the late hour, he let us run up to our rooms. I was just glad to strip off my clothes and tuck into my bed with the hope I’d never have to go through a night like that again.

I clicked off my night lamp, and a few seconds later, Jonathan decided to open his mouth.

“Russell and I broke up.”

I sighed. “Based on the conversation we had, I’d say that was long overdue.”

“I’m sorry, Arizona. I told you not to say you’d given me the money, and then I go and tell him myself like a fink.”

“You ever heard the expression honesty’s the best policy? Well, it’s the last time I’m doing you any favors.”

Jonathan didn’t reply. Then I heard something like a gasp, followed by something that sounded like crying. I took a deep breath, climbed out of my bed, and sat down next to Jonathan. I was mad at everyone for ruining that night, but I never could stand seeing someone in pain.

“All right Jonathan, I didn’t mean it. I know you had your reasons for not wanting Russell to know about the money. I bet the two of you can smooth things over in the morning.”

“He told me he’s better off without me,” Jonathan said through tears.

“Maybe he just needs some time to cool off.”

Jonathan kept sobbing. I lay down and hugged him against me. I was feeling pretty low too. In just one night, we four musketeers had broken up.
