Chapter Ten

“Savvy, someone is here to see you,” her grandmother called from the front of the store. “I’ll bring him back.”

Savvy had been in the stockroom since she arrived this morning, and she only had an hour before she’d need to leave and get home for the kids. Her clothes clung to her, not because they were too tight, but because the stockroom was like a sauna, and she’d been working nonstop sorting through a new shipment of camping gear. She hadn’t wanted to run the air conditioner when she was the only one working in the back, but as she tucked another damp blond lock behind her ear, she second-guessed her decision to forgo AC to cut costs.

Suddenly, her stomach knotted. What if the “him” on his way back was Brodie?

For the past two weeks, he’d barely said hello to her when he showed up at the trailer to work with Dylan. And the more he remained quiet, the more Savvy missed talking to him. She’d sensed them getting closer, the way they’d been in high school, when they talked about his past—and the fact that he’d nearly kissed her. But then he’d had to go and start talking about forgiveness and faith, subjects that’d been off-limits in Savvy’s book for over a decade.

She couldn’t forgive. And she’d lost her faith. Both for the same reason, and because of the same man.

Savvy, what changed?

Brodie’s question haunted her, because the answer was simple.

Everything.

However, since she hadn’t responded or explained, Brodie hadn’t said more than a handful of words to her since. Even when he’d taken the kids to church on Wednesday nights and Sundays, he’d conversed more with Rose and Daisy than with Savvy. And he and Dylan were quickly becoming best buds, with Dylan passing his weekly reading tests at school and, from what she gathered from the teenager, doing very well on the baseball field, too. Truth be told, Savvy expected all of the kids to pass their standardized tests next week, and while she could take credit for helping Rose and Daisy, the reason Dylan had progressed so quickly had nothing to do with Savvy and everything to do with Brodie.

Savvy felt she should thank him, but he hadn’t given her the chance, since he’d been talking to everyone in her household except Savvy. What if he’d come here because he’d finally decided he wanted to talk again, and she looked like death warmed over? She glanced in the full-length mirror covering the outside of the nearest closet. Yep, as bad as she feared. Hair yanked up in a messy ponytail. No makeup. Faded gray T-shirt. Army-green capris. Old tennis shoes with no laces. And no socks.

Don’t be Brodie. Don’t be Brodie. Don’t be Brodie.

She continued the silent mantra until her grandmother entered the stockroom, and Savvy saw the man walking behind her.

And she suddenly wished it had been Brodie.

“I’ll leave you two to talk,” her grandmother said, smiling at Savvy before turning and leaving the two of them alone.
