Chapter Seven

In his office, Devin switched on his printer, tapped in a few computer key commands and sat back, waiting for Chapter Sixteen to print out. Absently, he rubbed his thumb in the area of the cut that was healing very well, the stitches removed a week ago. Now all he was left with was a thin reddish line and a fierce itching.

Fortunately, he’d been able to resume his work quickly since the injury was to his left thumb, the only finger never used in typing. Though there’d been some general pain and soreness that first week, he hadn’t taken any more pain pills, hating the way the medication made him feel. Besides, Molly’s intimate presence in his life kept him on a perpetual high.

Leaning farther back in his old chair, he clasped his hands behind his head, aware that his face had moved into a smile at the mere thought of her. He carefully avoided labeling his feelings for Molly Shipman, knew only that they were powerful. She made him feel good, in bed and out. Hell, she made him feel ten feet tall at times.

She was warm and loving and funny and bright and…and much more. She was so appreciative for the little things he did for her, like popping in after her shift, catching her stepping out of the shower, and massaging her aching feet. The first time he’d picked some wild desert flowers he’d run across riding his Harley and stuck them in a vase he’d found in her cupboard, then propped them in the center of her kitchen table with a corny note, she’d cried. Normally, he wasn’t a romantic or even a sentimental guy, but she had him dreaming up things that would please her. So that she’d give him that wonderful smile. So that she’d move, warm and willing, into his arms.

The nights he spent with her in her bed or his had him wishing the daylight hours would hurry past.

But she had a temper, too. One night when he’d wanted to take her out, she’d adamantly refused, insisting that she had to finish her typing for the insurance company. Impulsively, he’d suggested she quit her evening job, that he’d give her a check each week to make up for the money she lost. He’d never seen eyes grow so frosty so quickly. No amount of apologizing could make her warm up. She hadn’t talked to him or smiled in his direction for two days until he’d been ready to go down on his knees and beg.

The ringing phone interrupted his reminiscences. Recognizing the voice as belonging to his agent, Mark Hanson, Devin smiled. “Hey, Mark, how goes the battle?”

“Not bad.” Never one to disappoint, Mark asked the question that he asked more often than any other. “How’s the book coming?”

Devin almost laughed out loud at the man’s predictability. “Great. More than halfway finished with the first draft.”

“That’s terrific. Since it’s going so well, do you think you could take a little time out to attend a writer’s conference in California? You could squeeze in a visit to your family.
