Chapter 13

Domenick

“He’s fucking dead.” Vitale smiled as he leaned against the marble island in my kitchen, and all my brothers nodded in agreement.

My brothers killed all those men who tried to hurt Selena. Even Ricco had taken out two before they killed him.

The five of us stood around the kitchen island, dipping into antipasto platter Ms. Marta whipped up when we arrived a few hours ago. Trying to leave Florence had been a nightmare last night. The worst nightmare I could imagine. When I saw they had shot Selena, rage blinded me.

My blood boiled at the thought of Selena getting killed.

“And Selena?” Vitale’s smile thinned.

“She’s alive.” My voice was hoarse from screaming at the medical staff I had to deal with in Italy last night.

“That was close,” Elba said. “Ricco was killed, and they shot Selena. They know about her. Maybe that’s why Marko is talking with Eeva.”

My fingers, still trembling from the adrenaline of the night, slowly moved through my hair. It was matted with blood, and dirt was caked in, making it look almost auburn in the dim light of the rising morning sun.

“You should have left Selena back in that hospital in Italy,” Iggy said.

I gritted my teeth. “The Dratshevs would have found her and finished the job. I had to fly her back with me.”

She was never leaving my sight again. Never leaving my home.

When I carried her limp body into the hospital in Florence, the doctors and nurses raced around her, doing everything in their power to help her. Waiting for her to get out of surgery felt like an eternity. They managed to remove the bullet and told me she needed time to heal.

She would live. But for how long?

If I left her in that hospital room, another Dratshev goon would get to her. I couldn’t risk it. The doctors protested when I took her, but even they couldn’t stop me.

I was an idiot to think she meant nothing to me. As head of the Satriano family, I kept my feelings for anyone at a distance, but then came Selena... She changed everything.

She may not be my blood, but she was my heart. I’d protect her at all costs.

Vitale nodded. “We’ll increase the security around the place. Nobody gets in without my say-so.”

“Agreed,” I said. “But we need to find out who betrayed us. Who told the Dratshevs about Selena? Or that we were in Italy with her.”

“I, uh... I think I can find that out,” Elba said with unease in his voice.

He was hiding something, but I didn’t have the patience to figure out my brother’s secrets right now.

I clenched my fists. “Don’t think, just do. And once you discover who it is, they will pay for what they’ve done.”

“That’s right, D,” Iggy said. “Nobody fucks with the Satriano family.”

I looked around at my brothers, their faces grim with determination. I knew I wasn’t alone; we were all in this together. They were ready to do whatever it took to protect our family.

I turned to Vitale.
