Cass took over manual control of the vehicle as they drove through town. A single traffic light in the center of the town marked the intersection with another state road, this one running east-west. A courthouse sat on opposite corners from an old town hall. The other two corners were occupied by a small grocery store and a diner.

Cass pulled over into a parking spot on the street directly in front of the diner. “Let’s go in here and get something to eat. I’ll bet the food is pretty good since it’s the only restaurant in town.”

“I’m starving,” Shelby said. “I won’t care if it’s great or not at this point. It’ll be good to get out and stretch our legs a little bit, too.”

Cass nodded and turned off the vehicle. There was a charging hook-up directly in front of where she parked. She reached out with her implant and connected with it, careful to use an anonymous local connection only. She deposited the charging fee before pulling the plug off the pedestal and connecting it to the vehicle. It would take a partial quick-charge while they ate, giving them enough to get to someplace where they could rest and fully charge the batteries.

Shelby came over to Cass as they took in the old-fashioned feel of the town’s main street. A couple of people had passed by on the sidewalk. All of them gave curious glances at the two strangers to the town. Cass noticed no one had any cybernetic enhancements, at least nothing visible. “I hope they don’t have a problem with people like us, Shel. What do you think?”

“Act normal. If we don’t cause trouble, no one will cause trouble with us. People just want to live their lives, right?”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

The two of them entered the diner and took seats at the counter. There was a small tablet propped up in front of each of the stools where they could enter their orders.

The two of them looked over the menu for a few minutes. Everything looked delicious to Cass. After pondering her options, she selected the Hearty Country Breakfast, which included two eggs, toast, hashbrowns, and a selection of sausage or bacon. She tapped in her entry, adding the option to cook her eggs over medium, and hit send at the same time Shelby made her choice.

Cass looked over at Shelby. “What did you yet?”

“I got the hearty country breakfast. What about you?”

Cass laughed. “Me, too. Great minds think alike, I guess.”

Shelby laughed along with her. After the tension of the previous day’s flight from Pittsburgh, it felt good to hear each other laughing again.

Cass smiled as she looked around at the patrons in the diner. Only about half of the seats were occupied, but it was early yet. A lot of people wouldn’t be awake since it was only seven in the morning.

She noticed several of the people were staring in their direction. She wasn’t sure if it was because of their cybernetics or just because they were strangers in town.
