Never underestimate the power of leveraging your personal relationships when it comes to cybersecurity. Having a network of trusted and reliable individuals who can offer advice, opinion, or solutions to an issue you’re having (and of course, vice versa) can be a significantly useful tool in your apparatus.

It might sound obvious, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s something many people consider. Given the rate of which people can move jobs and roles in the modern age, maintaining positive and supportive relationships with previous colleagues and people whose insight you trust might be the most valuable secret weapon you can have.

It may be that you have a group on a messaging platform or social media or even that you just meet informally for drinks semiregularly. Utilizing and having a soundboard to discuss issues or investigations with people you trust who have a fresh set of eyes can be very powerful. Of course, you have to remember to keep things as vague as necessary, though. You’re after advice, not a new supplier!
