Innovative Big Data

More recent and innovative developments in accessing and using Big Data arise in part from the rapid take-up of new technologies and organizations accessing information generated for different purposes such as sourcing GPS data from smartphones or comments on social media.

For example, the MGI report identifies urban planning as a macrolevel use of aggregate location data such as “information about peak and off-peak traffic hotspots, volumes and patterns of transit use, and shopping trends” and that “Singapore’s public transportation department is already using 10-year demand forecasts partly based on personal location data to plan transit needs. Traffic agencies in the Netherlands are predicting traffic and pedestrian congestion using personal location data from mobile phones” (Dobbs et al., 2011: 92).
