Panama City, Panama

Diego Romero couldn’t sleep in if he wanted to, and he had every reason to do so on this morning. After all, he had traveled from his office in Vienna, Austria to South America in the past week, eventually investigating that strange incident in Ecuador. Then he and his assistant, Gabriel Bruder, had gotten to Panama City late yesterday just in time to put their collected samples on a shipment to their lab in Austria. After that he had brought Bruder to his ancestral home and they had a little too much to drink as they discussed their most recent mission in Ecuador. But Diego had spent too much time in the old Panamanian Army, until Noriega was shipped off to prison, and then with the National Police, so he was used to long hours and early rising.

Now, Diego sat on his balcony overlooking the Pacific, a cup of strong Panamanian coffee in front of him, and his mind drifting from thought to thought. After getting into Panama City, he had called in a few favors from old friends in the intelligence community. A former CIA station chief was now retired to Panama, stretching his retirement money, and was due to arrive at his apartment any minute.

Richard Vogel arrived just a few minutes before 0700, dressed in white linen pants, a yellow silk shirt with tropical print, and leather sandals. His gray hair was to his shoulders, and his matching beard gave him the appearance of an aging hippy. But Diego knew that his old friend was about as far right as they came.

They embraced and then went back out onto the balcony. Diego had fresh coffee brewed and ready for his friend.

“I’m guessing you still like coffee,” Diego said, just before pouring the man a cup.

Vogel pressed his hands together as if praying. “Why else retire to Panama?”

“Well, there’s the beautiful women.”

“I know. I married one last year.”

“Seriously? Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you were off somewhere with that group of lunatics investigating some totally innocuous event, I’m sure.” Vogel smiled but Diego knew the man was serious.

“Fair enough. You have a picture?”

Vogel smiled and pulled up an image on his smart phone.

“Wow. She’s beautiful. Panamanian?”

“Colombian actually. We met on a cruise. I was a guest speaker and she was a singer. She still sings in a number of venues here in the city and on cruises.”

“I would love to hear her,” Diego said. “Let me see. Retired, check. Hot younger wife, check. Long hair and a beard?”

“Hey, after working so long in the Air Force and then the Agency, I said what the fuck. Grow the shit out. The wife likes it.” He hunched his shoulders.

Diego knew they were not only catching up, but his old friend was feeling him out. Trying to see just how much he wanted the information he had asked about. “Is there anything you can tell me about what happened in Ecuador?” Diego inquired.

The old Agency man sipped his coffee, and then delayed longer by filling his cup again.
