Chapter Ten

KNOX

My heart is about to burst right out of my chest watching my little Char Bar up on the stage, dancing her heart out. I can see in her eyes how hard she’s working, and how diligently she’s concentrating on everything she’s learned--the steps, the arm movements, the facial expressions.

She’s a kid who likes to get things right, and, sure, maybe I’m a little bit biased, but...in my estimation, she’s fucking killing it!

I’m sitting in the audience, surrounded by other parents that I can tell are just as proud of their kids as I am of Charlotte, and it hits me that, for once, I feel like I fit right in.

In the past, it was always kind of a weird thing to me, how to feel in relationship to Charlotte at events like this. I’m not her dad, although I can’t imagine loving her any more if I were. And I don’t want to dishonor her father’s memory by pretending that I fill that role.

I’m her guardian—but that sounds so cold and impersonal. Not how I actually feel about her at all.

But the conversation with Sadie at the pizza place has changed my perspective. As I sit here tonight watching her dance and looking at all the faces surrounding me, I know that we’re all filled with the exact same emotion. Sadie was right—he labels don’t matter as much as what’s in our hearts, and tonight, I’m just Charlotte’s parent.

Her proud as hell parent.

I can’t help but feel like the new connection I’ve found with Sadie is a big part of that feeling of fitting in, too. I don’t know how to explain it, but since I’ve been talking with her after every ballet class—yep, that’s right, I’ve been finding some excuse to talk to her after every single class—I feel like I have a partner.

Yeah, I know that’s super fucked. I haven’t even been on a date with the girl yet, and here I am feeling like I have a damn partner. But, hell, I can’t help what I feel—and that’s definitely what I feel.

And, anyway. That whole haven’t-been-on-a-date-yet thing? I plan to rectify that tonight.

My gut twists, thinking that she might already have plans.

Charlotte is going to spend the night with her friend from class. The minute she asked me if it would be all right for her to go, I knew what I was going to be doing with my rare “off duty” night—taking out the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, and probably ever will.

The only dent in the plan so far? I haven’t asked her yet. I’d been thinking about it a lot. Hell, I’ve lain awake nights over the past week, doing nothing but thinking about it.

I've gone back and forth but ultimately decided that the best thing would be to make it more of a casual suggestion. Sadie’s very ethical, from what I’ve picked up from our conversations, and one of the things that would be obvious to anyone with a brain is that her studio, and her students, mean damn near everything to her.
