Chapter Six

Maggie woke the next morning with a feeling of foreboding. She knew she had to try to find out who she was, the incident in the barn had convinced her, and Cyrus, surprisingly, that she had to know who she was. What if she had a medical condition that needed treatment? Not knowing her history put her in danger.

They ate breakfast together in the kitchen, Aiden made warm porridge, and they had sausages with freshly baked bed. These men certainly had embraced the self sufficiency way of life.

“So how do you survive here without a job? Surely you have to buy some things?” Maggie was eating the last of her porridge, the warmth spreading through her body. Looking out of the window, she knew she would be grateful of it, the day looked cold.

“We built the house ourselves, and we grow our own vegetables and fruit. You've seen the goats we use for milk. In the summer we go and help with the harvesting on a couple of farms,” Cyrus answered.

“I thought you completely shunned people.”

“Not entirely. There are a few people we trust and work with.”

“People like you?” Maggie asked, knowing they would realise what she meant.

“Yes. A bit like us.”

“Not bears?”

“There are not many bears. It makes it hard for us sometimes. Other shifters understand us, but not our true nature. Just like true beasts. Bears do not understand the way of the wolf, and the wolf does not understand the way of the bear.”

“OK. I get it,” Maggie said, although it would take some time for her to fully understand everything they said. It was still hard, even now, not to believe that what they showed her yesterday had not been some kind of dream or an illusion.

“We should get going. There might be some snow later today.” Aiden got up and took his dishes to the sink.

Almost wordlessly, they washed the dishes and dried them before putting them away. Maggie felt sick with nerves. What if this was the last time she would stand in this kitchen. If the number she called was her mother or something she could not simply say, “Hi, I’m alive but now I’m going to live secretly with two men I only met two days ago.” Even in her present state, she knew that would not be very believable. Questions would be raised as to whether they had some mental hold over her.

If it came down to it, she would leave simply to protect them, and then find a way of returning to them. In her heart, she knew no matter what happened, that this was where she belonged.

Unable to put it off any longer they prepared for the trek to the store. The two men made sure she was dressed warmly. Then Maggie fetched her purse and made sure the telephone number was in it. Glancing at her things one last time before they left, she strained her mind to try to recall anything about it. Still nothing, so they set out to reach the store.
