Apparently, Darius doesn't like the fact I've survived two months without contacting him.

Or begging him to have me back.

He’s been drinking, that much is clear. Not only did I not want to go with him anyway, I definitely don’t want to get into his car which smells like a distillery.

All I want is to finally be free of this man. The real monster.

Then he cracks me around the head with something and everything goes black. When I recover my wits, Darius is standing over Atlas holding a fucking gun on him.

“What the fuck is this, Flick?” He says with undisguised disgust.

“Atlas?” I call out, “are you okay?”

“Atlas?” Darius spits out. “You know this freak? Why is he wearing a fucking costume?”

He looks over at me, spittle-flecked lips and mad eyes. Why on earth did I ever think I loved him? He is so damn ugly both inside and out.

"It's not a costume, Darius," I say, quietly. "And I wouldn't piss him off if you value your life."

Every part of me is shaking. I don't know if the gun is loaded or even where Darius might have got it from. I thought all his talk about 'knowing some people' was usual lawyer bluster. But maybe he did know 'some people.

What I don’t know is, will he pull the trigger?

“Don’t piss the freak off? Story of your pathetic life, isn’t it?” Darius sneers. “I came here to give you a second chance, but instead I find you whoring yourself out to this…thing.” His mouth twists horribly. “You haven’t been fucking it, have you?”

"Fuck you, Darius," I yell out, seeing Atlas's tail slowly snaking toward him. "I did, and you know what?"

“What?”

“He was a better lover than you even before he touched me with his cock, which is, I should say about a hundred times bigger than yours. Not that it would be difficult, most of the time with you I didn’t even know it was in or not.” I force out a laugh.

“You bitch!” Darius swings the gun around at me with a snarl, Atlas’s tail grabs his ankle and pulls.

In slow motion, he falls back, arms flailing. The gun flies out of his hand and skitters away into a bush as he hits the floor like the sack of shit he is and lies still.

Almost immediately, Atlas is beside me, taking me in his arms and crooning low in his chest.

"Did he hurt you, my Flick?" His hands are everywhere until they alight on my face.

I hiss out a breath as he touches my bruised cheek. Atlas bears his teeth and turns back to Darius, claws extended.

“He’s not worth it, Atlas. I’ll call the police. They probably won’t care he assaulted me but they will care about the gun.”

Atlas frowns at me as if I've been speaking a foreign language.

“The police are the human equivalent of your monster council. In human terms, it’s illegal for him to have a gun. He will go to prison for a long time, longer than he would for hitting me.
