Chapter Nineteen

Makiah headed off to the castle in search of his father. He hoped that whatever the cryptic nonsense the witch had just fed him would make sense to his father, and they could talk to Izzy about it. Hurrying through the courtyard, he spotted Kyra and Rune as they made their way through the small market just beyond the castle.

His stomach sank, he hoped someday it wouldn’t sucker punch him every time he saw her with him. Forcing a ragged breath from his lungs, he hurried inside the castle and up the stairs to his parents’ quarters.

Bypassing the formality of knocking, he pushed open the door and entered the living room. He found his dad stretched out on the couch with his forearm resting over his eyes.

“Am I interrupting?”

Uriah lifted his arm and peered at his son.

“Never, was just a long night on patrol. What’s up, bud?”

Makiah shook his head as he flopped in the chair across from the couch.

“How much do you know about the Circe witches?”

Uriah’s brow arched as he pushed himself to a sitting position and studied his son. “Not much really, none of us do.”

Makiah nodded, his brows knit together as he asked, “What about Izzy? Is she part Circe? Dec said something about it being Circe magic she used to heal you.”

Uriah sighed. None of them could ever explain how Izzy had come to use the magic of the Circe, it wasn’t unusual for her to use syphoned magic, but as far as they knew she hadn’t come in contact with a Circe witch. “I don’t know how Izzy did it... the consensus is that there has to be Circe in her line somewhere... but not even Makyle knows where. What’s going on, Kiah?”

With elbows resting on his knees he leaned forward.

“Samira gave me a book... about grandma’s family and the curse. I was trying to figure out some way to help...I don’t know, dad, everything is changing, Ky’s dating Rune, did you know that?”

Uriah nodded sympathetically. “I heard. I also heard you had something to do with that.”

Makiah shrugged and looked away from his father. “Yeah, I told her to...to stop trying to force a future for us... I think she’s happy with Rune, she seems to smile and laugh a lot. Which is great.... I just—”

“You’re not so happy now, right?”

“Sucks, but better one of us be laughing and smiling then both of us be miserable. Putting the Kyra issues aside, the curse isn’t just about us. It affects the triplets too. I want to help.”

“I’m not sure what you can do that we haven’t tried... but we haven’t given up, Makiah... we’ll figure it out.”

“Yeah, well, Dec, Rain and I went into the forest where you found the Fates. A Circe witch stopped us... spouted off some cryptic shit about the answer being among us and how they did try and help Freya.”

Uriah narrowed his gaze on his son. “Makiah, what exactly did she say? I need verbatim here, kid, so think really hard.
