FOUR

With Grady’s tutelage, Ian had progressed so much in the past few days that they started filming today, only three days behind schedule. If they pressed through and worked a few longer shifts, Kaia was sure they could make up the time. And extra silver lining, they already had most of the landscape shots they’d need.

“Action,” she said, calmly, because yelling it the first time had spooked the horse. Not so impressive on her end, but Ian had gotten control of his equine co-star and had her back and ready to go within minutes.

With the scene off and running, she glanced at Grady. She gave him a thumbs-up, a gesture she was pretty sure she hadn’t used since childhood. But he returned it, along with a wide smile.

She returned her attention to the scene, happiness tingling through her as it unfolded the way she envisioned in her mind since she first read the brilliant screenplay.

Dad’s movies always involved a lot of fight scenes, explosions, and love interests that were basically mannequins who needed saving. Those type of movies provided her a nice life, and it wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy them. But she wanted her movies to have more character depth. To rely on acting and the dialogue and the emotions as opposed to look-how-much-crap-we-can-blow-up. Are you not entertained?

Excitement swirled through her as she peered through the camera and took in the way Ian looked against the breathtaking backdrop.

They filmed all the way through the first scene, no need for a second take—which she knew wouldn’t happen often, but it still felt like a huge victory.

When she spun around to tell the crew to set up for the next scene, she nearly bumped into Grady. Even though they hadn’t collided, he put his hands on her hips, like he meant to steady her. Instead it had the opposite effect, everything inside of her completely unsteady now.

“Sorry,” he said. “I was just going to ask if you still need me.”

She stared into his slate-colored eyes and thought, Yes, yes I think I do. Then reality crept in, whispering a reminder about how she resolved to focus on her movie so she wouldn’t accidentally fall for the sexy cowboy. “Need you?”

“For training Ian? The scene worked—or at least it looked that way to me—so I was going to go catch up on everything I’ve neglected the past few days.”

“Oh. Of course. I think for the rest of the week, we’ll stick to four hours of training in the morning, then filming for as long as the daylight allows. Then you won’t have to play catch up quite so much.”

“Sounds good. Just call me if you need me.”

“Thank you. Seriously, Grady…” She didn’t even know how to put into words how much she appreciated his help. “Since I bartered away half my soul to make this movie happen in the first place, I can’t offer you the entire thing, but after Ian’s miraculous transformation over the past few days, I think I owe you what’s left of it.
