When Sabina hit the yogurt tub, it made a short wump sound because it vibrates for a short time. But when she hit the edge of the metal bowl, it went bingggg. That’s because the bowl vibrates longer than the yogurt tub.

A moving object has energy. When it collides with another object, energy is transferred from one object to the other, causing a vibration. The sound waves from this collision keep going until they run out of energy.

Finally we had all the instruments ready to go. It was time to practice.

“Three, two, one . . .” I said.

We played for a while, until Dad came in holding his ears.

“Uh-oh, are we playing too loud?” I asked.

“Well, my ears are ringing,” he said.

“Sorry, Dad,” I said. “I guess the sound vibrations are vibrating in your ears.”

“That’s true,” Dad said. Then he explained how our ears work. I grabbed my notebook to write down the details.
