The Mother

As a subject she yielded little

though her brow told

she was a mother—she knew

the necessity of giving others pain

When questioned her rigid attitude

suggested everything suspected

She implied a mind compartmental

component contraption—her mode

Tiny claws in me clutched truth

though she would go on mirroring back

my every inquest

She never did speak, of course She never

even showed her mouth Still her voice filtered

mote-like particulate as dust

Everything she meant

she meant though arch and ceaseless glint

So no she did not speak and yet I sensed

as if a flare of instinct toward water

her flowing great volume

her acute determination

her molten will to express
