This was Redman’s first time being an independent artist after being signed to Def Jam for over twenty years. He asked Dame if an artist has a distribution deal, does that interfere with them owning their music?

That is ‘owning’ your own music . That’s just paying somebody to put your music out . That’s like somebody cleaning your house; that doesn’t mean that’s their house . I’m not saying that you can’t work with corporate; you just can’t work for corporate . There is an option, and I’m not saying I won’t work with corporate . Like, I hear some people saying, ‘Well you wasn’t saying that when they was giving you money .’ Man, they didn’t give me shit . We were partners . We put money in that shit . You acquire something that we fucking brought value to . We brought that; we ain’t giving you nothing . Y’all wasn’t fucking with us when we wasn’t rolling .

Red then asked him if being a partner be the only way he would do business with corporate? A distribution deal, in essence, is hiring them . They won’t want you to say it like that, but that’s what it is . You own your own masters, and when you don’t feel like working with them anymore, you take your masters with you . They might give you an advance against what you’re going to sell, but that’s so they can make money off you . Like, the distribution deals I’ve done, I don’t even want them to give me any money until I hand them the product . I don’t want them acting like I owe them anything . I don’t want to owe anybody money . I want you to make your money back day one . As soon as I give it to you, it’s on you now . Basically you’re giving me the money to make sure that you do your job ‘cause I’m trusting you with something valuable .

Gems: A distribution deal means that the distribution company works for you because you own your masters. They might give you an advance against what you’re going to sell, but that’s so they can make money off of you.

I’ve learned to never take an advance from the distribution company until I have my product ready to hand them. That way they can’t front like I owe them anything.

Basically the distribution company gives you money to be involved in distributing something valuable, which is your product.
