Chapter 6

It was the day of the full moon, and Edwina woke early despite her late night. The hard press of urgency wouldn’t let her sleep. Tonight, Virgil would be forced to commit a crime and then he would die.

And why? For the greed of another.

She wished she knew who it was she’d seen in her vision, but no such luck. If wishes were unicorns, I’d be richer than Bezos.

Hoping against hope, she headed straight for The Pink Lady. Hope was dashed the minute she arrived. The store was still dark. No one had been there.

Pulling out her phone, she dialed David’s number. She didn’t much care if he were busy or still asleep. This was important.

David answered after several rings, his voice raw and exhausted.

“Sorry to wake you,” she said, not particularly sorry at all, though she felt for the man. “But I need you to come down and let me into the shop.” Yes, Jeremiah had said he’d arrange it, but there was no time to wait.

There was a pause. “Why?”

“Because this is likely where whoever took Virgil took him from. I need to see if I can track him.”

“I’ll be there in five.” And he hung up.

She liked a person with purpose who didn’t ask a bunch of stupid questions. David knew what had to be done and was willing to do it.

While she waited, she circled the shop, letting her inner sight scan the area around the building. There had been a lot of people coming and going, leaving traces of their energy behind. There was the trace of a woman worried about something and the angry traces of a male shifter. At some point last night, a witch had walked by. Not one of Emory’s coven, but someone with only the lightest dusting of magic, a cheerful outlook, and a determined nature.

Around back near the dumpsters, she found traces of Virgil, though they were faded since it had been several days now since he walked this way. His energy was... yellow. A bright goldenrod that came from his happiness and open disposition. An open disposition that had likely gotten him in trouble.

She half expected to find traces of what had happened to him, but there were none. So perhaps this wasn’t where they’d gotten to him.

A car pulled into the gravel drive and parked next to her. The door swung open, and David stepped out. “Find anything yet?”

She shook her head. “Nothing of any use.”

His expression sagged, but he straightened his shoulders and marched to the back door. He quickly unlocked it, opened the door, punched the code into the alarm system, and stepped out of her way.

She nodded in approval. Definitely a smart man.

Interesting that the code was set though.

“Does anyone besides you and Virgil have that code?” she asked.

He shook his head. “Just the two of us.”

While it was possible David was involved, she didn’t believe it for a second. More likely the person who took Virgil was controlling his mind and had him set the code himself.
