Jet

Also known as black amber

Jet is actually a type of coal formed from the fossilized wood of ancient conifers in the genus Araucaria that flourished 180 million years ago.116 It has been used as beads for adornment since the Bronze Age. Its name comes from the Old French jaiet, which was derived from the Latin gagates after the town or river Gagas in Asia Minor, where it was mined.117

The Romans mined jet in northern England, beginning in approximately 1500 BCE, and valued it as a trade item.118 Believing in jet’s magical power, especially to guard against nightmares and witchcraft, the Romans used it for protective amulets. They also enjoyed it for simple jewelry, as evidenced by the rings found on the fingers of skeletons in the catacombs of Rome. During medieval times, large flat pieces were polished and used as scrying mirrors. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, jet was favored for jewelry and made more popular by Queen Victoria when she went into mourning after the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert.

Jet is black and opaque with a greasy luster. With no internal structure, it is classified as amorphous.

This stone is associated with the afterlife and helps bring emotional balance after grieving. In addition, jet has healing energy that soothes the emotions and the soul. It is an aid for dealing with fears, especially for children, and for dispelling nightmares. Use this stone for binding spells and for breaking or warding off hexes. Its protective energy also shields against black magic. Jet is instrumental as a good luck charm, especially in legal matters and for winning favors. This stone also supports divination practices and boosts psychic abilities.

Jet is associated with the elements earth and water. Its astrological influence comes from Pluto, Saturn, and the zodiac constellation of Capricorn. Jet is also associated with the deities Cybele, Dôn, Njord, and Pan.

Jettison Hexes with Jet

If you are concerned about hexes, black magic, or any negative energy intentionally sent your way, use jet to ward off anything unwanted. Prepare at least four pieces of jet by passing them through the smoke of burning mugwort and lavender. As you do this, say three times:

Place one stone at each corner of your property or house and visualize their energy rising and connecting above the roof, creating a dome around you and your home. Any other pieces of jet that were prepared can be carried as talismans.
