“Can I ask why my crystal is broken in two, and why you’re wearing the pieces like spectacles, young tortoise?” asks the tall wizard.

Winston, Dougie, and the children look up at him in amazement. “It’s mine!” threatens Dougie possessively. “Do you even know what it does?” asks the wizard. “Er ... no,” says Jack.

“Nothing. It’s not even a real crystal,” informs the wizard, “It’s just a chunk of red glass that I made at Gaye’s glass-blowing class.” The children, Winston, and Dougie all look at one another, dumbfounded.

“Yeah. I’m not a real wizard yet either. I’m just a trainee,” he blurts out.

“So, you’re not magic and this crystal doesn’t do anything?” ask the children, disappointed.

“I dunno. My mum always said I was her magic little boy! But, no. It’s not like the crystal is useless though. I mean, it’s a kaleidoscope. You know, when you look through it, it shows you the world in a million different ways, which can be helpful if you’re in a bind, of course.”

Now the children, having been raised by a wise, brilliant woman, know when the wool is being pulled over their eyes. Is this person mad? Does he take them for fools? What potion has he been drinking?

The way he fumbles over his words seems highly suspicious. ‘Magic little boy’. What an odd thing to say. Magic. Little. Boy. M ... L ... B ... MLB! He’s the Mystical Legend of Brandoria! Infamous for his sly, shape-shifting shenanigans. He’s trying to trick them out of the hyper drive crystal.

“A kaleidoscope,” muses Jack. “That would be an awesome addition to my fragmented illusions collection ... But, we really must go now ...” Dougie notices Jack clenching his fists and crossing them behind his back. Being a member of B.U.T.T., Dougie recognises it immediately as a signal for danger. “Well, we’ve got to go!” Dougie exclaims, clearing his throat. “Excuse us, but we need to cross the lake before sunrise. Nice meeting you, sir. Pardon me!” Dougie mutters as he shoulders his way past the wizard, holding onto the children.

As quick as lightning, the MLB sticks out his arm, grabbing Winston by the top of his shell and lifting him high off the ground. “Not so fast!” he snarls through clenched teeth. Without a second thought, Winston tucks his legs and arms into his shell and poops himself right out of it onto the forest floor below.

He lands with a crash, along with a handful of coloured gems, a stinky cheese sandwich, a couple of his favourite marbles, and his missing maths homework from 75 years ago!
