Chapter 12

I rubbed my belly as we left the Pizza Nook. It was a busy little corner restaurant on the ship that I’d discovered the first day of the cruise. Having just polished off two slices of supreme, covered with mozzarella, provolone, olives and veggies, it occurred to me that working out in the near future was no longer optional. There were just too many delectable temptations on the ship.

Oli and I wandered into the atrium and took a load off next to a tinkling fountain to discuss our next step.

I said, “I know there’s a murder to solve and all, but I think a nap is in order.”

Oli rolled her eyes. “You should have stuck with one slice. I’m not sleepy at all. Pizza has too many carbs, and I feel all bloated now.”

I wanted to sock her. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. You still have a fast metabolism too. I’m sure you’ll be bikini-ready by sundown.” I watched a couple bickering as they stomped past. Sounded like she wanted to go ashore and shop and he wanted to take a charter fishing trip. I hoped he’d win and maybe rent fishing rods from my dad. “That was pretty cool how Karine gave us that card,” I whispered. “But we need to be careful.”

Oli nodded. “It sounded like she wasn’t too fond of the dead guy.”

I nodded thoughtfully, remembering what Karine had said about JJ being on the lower decks and bothering her and the other housekeeping staff. Suddenly, a picture popped into my head. It was from when I’d gotten lost heading back from medical. JJ had come out of a cabin on deck nine. He’d turned around to have what looked like a pretty heated argument with someone inside the room. “I know what we should do first.”

Popping to my feet, I forgot all about my over-stuffed belly and hurried for the elevators. Oli followed as I filled her in on my thoughts. “Let’s see if we can have a chat with whoever is in that cabin. Maybe we can find out if JJ had been up to something that could’ve gotten him killed.”

Oli jogged to keep up with me. “What about the phone? I thought we needed to search for that.”

“Yeah, yeah.” I jabbed the up button at the elevator bank. “We can do that next. It’s quarter to five. The early dinner crowd should be getting ready. Maybe we’ll get lucky and catch whoever’s staying in that room.” I figured we had a fifty-fifty shot of fortune being on our side.

When we arrived on deck nine, I stood biting my lip, while trying get my bearings. The hallways really did all look alike. Then I remembered having studied the map on the wall the day I’d gotten turned around on that deck. Grabbing Oli’s hand, I dragged her over to the wall. It took me a full minute to translate the 2D image into something I could follow. “Um, this way I think.” I hustled off in what I thought was the right direction.
