Chapter 16
As soon as I was out of the room, I pulled out my cell phone and typed in the number I had memorized from the scrap of paper. As I put it in, I realized that it was the first number Iâd had to memorize since high school.
I hurried back to the conference suite. Iâd been gone longer than Iâd anticipated, and Sam was probably wondering where Iâd got to.
When I arrived at the lounge, the space was deathly silent.
âHello?â I called out.
âHey,â came a quiet voice.
On the other side of the room Samantha was slumped in one of the armchairs. She was slumped so low in the chair that I hadnât even noticed that she was there when I first looked around the room. She looked as exhausted as I felt.
âWhere is everyone?â
âI sent them off after the scene finished. Donât worry, all the clues got distributed and the plot moved along nicely. Everyone seemed to have fun. But they did keep asking where you were.â
I crossed the room and sat on the arm of the chair that Sam was using. She looked completely worn out.
âSorry about that. It wonât happen again.â
âNo problem. Those people though...â She gave a weary sigh.
âNo disasters, I hope?â
Sam looked up at me with amused eyes.
âI stopped the disasters before they could happen,â she said with a little laugh. âSome of them got it in their heads that you being absent was part of the plot. A group of them were convinced thereâd been a kidnapping.â
âOh, wow.â I felt half-amused and half-guilty. If I hadnât left Sam in that situation, she wouldnât have had to deal with so much nonsense.
âYeah. I persuaded them that you were off preparing stuff for later on, and that your absence was not a part of the story. What were you doing?â
The arm of the chair wasnât all that comfortable a seat, so I stood up and turned another armchair around to face Sam. When I sat down again, almost as wearily as Sam looked, I had the sudden thought that we were like a pair of old grandmas sitting in our armchairs.
âIâve been thinking about this morning. About how it probably isnât a coincidence that the fake death and the real death were staged in exactly the same way. Not many of us had access to the plot, and the people who knew it best were the Danes. I wanted to find out if there were any hints or clues to suggest that they had something against Felicity.â
This drew Samâs interest, and she pushed herself into a slightly more upright position and faced me directly.
âSo did you break into their cabin?â
âNo... though I probably should have.â Too late now though. âActually, I broke into Felicity Bullâs cabin. I was hoping to find some hint as to whether she had it in for the Danes, or anyone else on the ship.â
Sam leaned forward now, keen to hear about my adventure.
âDid you find anything?â
âNothing to implicate the Danes. Not in there, anyway.
