Chapter Sixteen

The following day, Helen came to grab her stuff before I had to go in for my torturous shift. She’d brought me a hot chocolate and an everything bagel. She’d been full of apologies for her curtness with me yesterday and we’d chatted as I got ready for work. I acted like everything was…fine.

I was a coward and I hadn’t brought the fight club or the money up again, because we chatted like it was before she started going weird of me.

When I left the dorm, it was bittersweet, because I wouldn’t get to see her as much anymore. Especially now that she was involved with those four menaces. She probably thought I would be safer if she stayed away. I understood the feeling, so I would give her space for now.

It felt as if the days sped by because the amount of schoolwork was at an all time peak. Throw in working at the office and there was hardly any free time.

Either I was drowning in research, at the gym, or I was Tanner’s personal office bitch. He was taking advantage of his lead position something fierce. There’d been a couple of evenings where I was already settled and playing video games after getting my shit done. Then, out of the blue, he called me to photocopy piles of paperwork for him.

One of those times, I almost wrapped my hands around his neck but recognized that it would go worse for me than him if our skin touched. So, I plastered a pleasant, although, twitch-y smile on my face as I did whatever he asked.

Now it was the end of October, and I’d been living in a lonely room for three weeks or so. It was difficult being alone after getting used to being around Helen and simply hearing her breathing at night. I never realized how comforting the sound of breathing was.

Although growing up I had been undoubtedly loved by two people, I’d had a lot of time to myself, and that same loneliness was weighing heavily on me.

It was partially my fault that I wasn’t with Sam, Louis, or trying to get all up in Helen’s business. Enzo’s threat toward anyone he saw me with replayed in my head more often than I liked. As each day passed, I understood that Enzo hadn’t made this demand out of jealousy. He was trying to isolate me to an extent that I’d do something drastic, but little did he know I had a lot of experience being alone, especially in the last two years. Enzo and his cronies could do whatever they wanted to me, but everyone else was a big no. So, I kept my head down and didn’t do anything other than school work and Call of Duty sessions with Terence, the guy I’d met on the airplane. He was still sweet as pie and kept trying to get me to visit. He’d promised to show me around Vegas and although the adventurous yolo part of me wanted to, I told him that I had to wait until I wasn’t so swamped.
