They sat on one of the large benches, Suzette between them. Nikko kept a hand on her thigh, her legs were crossed, and she was wearing a light floral skirt. Miles had his arm over her shoulder on the back of the bench. The three of them were watching the water and the people enjoying a Sunday afternoon.

“So, tell us about some of your hobbies. Do you like boating, snorkeling, any water sport activities?” he asked, hoping she liked all of the above. Nikko and Miles were both pretty active and enjoyed sport activities.

“I love all of that, when I have the time. I’m really looking forward to next weekend and the party on the water. My friend Lacey’s boyfriend, Jeb, is bringing us on his boat.”

“Is that the blonde who you were with the other night at Crossroads?” Miles asked her.

“Yes, we’ve been friends forever.”

“And that guy Jeb, he’s been dating Lacey long?” Miles asked, and Nikko knew that tone. His brother didn’t care for Jeb, and neither did Nikko.

“Why do you ask? I mean, you sound like you don’t like him. Do you know him?” she asked.

“I don’t know him, but something about the way he acted with your friend bothered me,” Miles told her.

“Yeah, he was a bit handsy, and seemed like he was controlling, too,” Nikko added.

Suzette released a long sigh. “I know what you mean. She says he treats her right. I ask her often because Jeb kind of rubs me the wrong way, but it’s her decision. Lacey can get just about any guy she wants, but she doesn’t think so. Plus Jeb has this way about him. Maybe because he’s a big business guy and makes a lot of money? I don’t know. He could be an okay guy, but I don’t spend a lot of time with them.”

“Well, hopefully, you’ll be spending a lot of time with us,” Miles told her then winked. He placed his fingers under her chin and stared down into her eyes. As he leaned forward as if he might kiss her, she turned and looked down.

“Miles?”

“I’m sorry. I know we promised slow. You’re just so beautiful, so sweet and honest. It touches me,” he admitted and then looked out toward the water. Nikko had never seen Miles act like this. He was being compassionate, caring, and letting his feelings show. Nikko hoped that Suzette was authentic and didn’t hurt his brother’s feelings. His own concern about her sincerity popped into his head. But then Suzette took Miles’s hand, brought it to her lips, and kissed his knuckles.

“Be patient with me. Please,” she whispered.

Nikko smiled.

“So, how about you come on our boat with us and our friends instead of Jeb’s? That way we can have full quality time together?”

She glanced at Nikko and gave him a small smile. “I don’t know how Lacey will feel about that.”

“Oh, I think Lacey will be fine with it. She has her man and his friends. Plus, with all our busy schedules, we’d like to get in that quality time to get to know you.
