Lomela itself was not much of a town. The chief’s house and the old post and telecommunications office (long since defunct) were the only concrete structures that we saw. Beyond this, the town itself only seemed to consist of a roundabout with a few shopping shacks and some people sitting around looking bored. There were one or two motorbikes. We got out of 9Bob to buy some dough balls and realised that most of the shacks were one deep from the road and behind them was the jungle. There was nothing here, yet there were more than ten officials in this town because it was a district centre. Captain Martin explained that the officials had responsibility for the whole district, but that it was all jungle and they never had any fuel so were not able to visit any of the villages. It was exceptionally weak governance. We followed his directions to the N’djali river, and to our great delight the start of the road had been pisted.
