On Hold

“Honey, when you come back out, would you mind bringing me the glass of water I left on the counter?” Doug Redman said, leaning back in his chair with the Sunday paper. It was a biased newspaper, but he enjoyed reading the local news. Almost every page was devoted to bashing the president. In the Op-Ed section was an article calling for his resignation. But then again, Doug knew the Arizona Red Star did not differ from most of the newspapers in the country.

“Ok, are you hungry?” Liz called out from the kitchen.

“Sure, I could eat. What do you have for your poor starving husband?” Doug said, enjoying civilian life and being able to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon at home.

“We’ve got some leftover pizza from last night that the kids didn’t eat. Want me to heat a couple slices up for you?”

“That’ll do. Thanks, honey. Where are the kids?”

“They both went to the movies with some friends and won’t be back until later this afternoon. Why do you ask?” Kim said, rubbing her tongue behind her upper lip and glancing over in Doug’s direction.

“Hmm…. just wondering. Sounds like we’re alone for a few hours.”

“Sounds like it to me, too,” Kim said, knowing her husband’s familiar conversation of foreplay.

“I’ve got an idea for some fun after lunch.”

“I bet you do… Let’s hurry and eat then,” Kim said with a smile.

“Hmm… I’ve got a better idea—let’s have fun first and then eat,” Doug said, putting aside the paper. His phone vibrating on the coffee table interrupted Doug’s thoughts of lust with his wife.

“Damn, be right there, honey. I’ve got to take this call. Dax, how the hell are you?” Doug said, knowing from the caller ID who it was. A call from Dax was a sharp crack back into reality from his thoughts of being under the sheets with Liz. In less than a nanosecond, he went from being aroused to full on, head-on-a-swivel alertness. Dax was not only a comrade-in-arms to him, he was also the older brother and mentor he’d never had. Dax only called when something bad had happened.

“Hey, Doug. How are you, Liz and the kids?”

“They’re great, Dax. How are you doing? Enjoying retirement up there in Prescott?”

“You know, retirement has its moments… none of which are ever exciting. Not like the old days. I miss them. But, what the hell. I’ve still kept my toe in the pond. Doug, I’ll get to the point. You know the FBI agent who saved you and Carter’s bacon? Rebecca Harper?”

“Great lady. I hope I get to meet her someday. She’s been our guardian angel for the last year and a half. What’s going on?”

“Friday, her nine-year-old adopted daughter, Kimyung, was taken right off the schoolyard in the middle of morning recess,” Dax said, his voice breaking.

“What the hell? What happened? Did they get her back?” Doug asked.

“No, they haven’t. We know where she is, but Rebecca and the bureau can’t get to her?”

“What do you mean ‘can’t get to her?’ How come they can’t rescue her?”

“The girl’s in Mexico.
