Our best efforts to live a godly life result in sweatstained jerseys, but there is One whose jersey is covered in blood. His name is Jesus, and it was His flawless performance that secured my spot on the team. The Bible tells us that God “made [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is the gospel. Our spot in God’s kingdom has absolutely nothing to do with our performance and everything to do with Christ’s performance. He took my sins—and yours—to the cross and died so that we could make the team. At the cross Jesus exchanged our sins for His righteousness. “How is this fair?” you ask. It isn’t fair; it’s grace. This is good news!

As a young teenager, I believed that the gospel was simply what I needed to believe in order to be saved. I did not realize that the gospel isn’t simply the power of God to save us; it’s the power of God to change us once we’re saved. The gospel is not simply our ticket into heaven, but it’s also God’s power to sanctify us as we grow as His children. Jesus is the basis of our salvation. It has nothing to do with us. We bring nothing to the table.
