Chapter Sixteen

I lie in the bed next to Alex, his steady breathing calming me. Despite my lack of panic, all I can think about is that someone out there wants me dead.

The thought of someone wanting me dead wasn’t a complete shock. When you grow up surrounded by security guards because of who your family is, you understand the constant danger you’re in. Having a price on your head is a very different matter. Someone out there has taken an active step to put an end to my life for one reason or another.

“Amelia,” Alex says, interrupting my thoughts. I look over at him, the concern heavy in his gaze. “Are you okay?”

I ignore his question because I know the truth will only upset him. “I thought you were sleeping,” I reply.

He shifts and lifts an arm so I can snuggle close to him. “I was.”

“Sorry, did I wake you up?” I ask as his arms wrap around me in a tight embrace.

He shakes his head and presses a warm kiss on the top of my head. “No, I’ve never really been much of a heavy sleeper.”

I take a deep breath and bury my face in his chest. “Do you think Nikolai will find out who wants me dead?”

Alex’s grip on me tightens. “Absolutely. And either way, I want you to know I will make sure you’re safe, I promise.”

As I lie in Alex’s arms, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions. As much as my gut tells me I shouldn’t, the truth is I do feel safe in his embrace. He’s going to be the head of the Mafia that my family has been fighting with my entire life, yet somehow, I have no doubt he would die for me.

“I don’t know how to thank you,” I whisper, my voice barely above a whisper.

“You don’t have to thank me,” he replies, his voice firm and reassuring. “When I heard Nikolai say there was a price on your head—fuck, I can’t describe how terrified and pissed off it made me. I am going to kill the person responsible.”

My breath catches at his words, feeling the heavy weight of our reality. His protectiveness sends a shiver down my spine, and I find solace in his embrace. “Thank you,” I whisper, my voice shaky.

He leans down, capturing my lips in a desperate, hungry kiss. I feel the urgency behind it. Our bodies press against each other, desire and fear intertwining in a passionate embrace.

His touch ignites my inner fire, my desire for him exploding to life once again. I want him, and I want him now.

Our lips part, and I pull his face to my neck. He growls low in his throat as he nips and licks a burning trail down my neck. He slides his hands down my stomach as I run my fingers through his hair. As if by instinct, his cock presses against my opening, and I let out a moan of pleasure.

I eagerly anticipate him inside me when the sound of his phone ringing on his nightstand interrupts us.
