Micaela builds relationships with her clients. Working with people who have a natural chemistry with one another is essential for building a long-lasting relationship. Of course, there are times that doesn’t happen. The “initial conversation” is the basis of all collaborations. From the beginning, it’s about communication. Good communication is how collaborative relationships are built. Bad communication is how they are destroyed.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Leandra Medine, founder of Man Repeller, combined her creative edit team with her branded content because she didn’t have the resources for two different departments. The result of rethinking the creative approach, a synergy was created that not only was great for Man Repeller but also benefited the client. Mutual trust, mutual benefit, is what can build lasting relationships.

Debbie Millman’s advice is to always fight for the relationship, not the work. If you put the relationship first, you can have a client for life, while if you put the work first, you’ll have one project with that client. She shared a story about designing the merchandising for Star Wars Episode 2. When her team first presented their ideas to the client, they hated it. Instead of pushing on stubbornly, she stopped the meeting and said, “Give us another chance to present something you’ll like.” When they presented for the second time, they liked it much better. But the funny thing was that the final product wasn’t significantly different from the first round. By listening and showing she was willing to make changes, she gained her client’s trust.

Photographer Terry Tsiolis says that it is important to have the same taste and that you have to respect each other. He is always working with hair and makeup artists. Collaboration is key for a successful photo shoot. “It’s like a secret dialogue you have with people,” said Terry. “They know exactly what I’m saying. I don’t have to explain, ‘Make her hair bigger or put more makeup on.’ The initial reaction to me with hair and makeup people is just a connection and ease. Obviously, I respect their work, and they respect my work and they know what I want. But then you build together, and it becomes a collaboration.”

The more you work with the same people, the more the notion of “a secret dialogue” comes into play. That’s why people prefer to work with their own people, because they know the communication is there, even if it’s not spoken.

Creative director of Vogue, Sally Singer collaborates with photographers, directors, models, and celebrities. The best collaborator is someone who wants to do it, especially someone who is invested in doing something that hasn’t been done before. One of her favorites is Serena Williams:
