Now it is true that the Hebrew Bible generally portrays its God as unwilling to allow other powers to retain control, but if, as Anderson thinks, those “rival power[s]” never acquire control, never pose a serious challenge to YHWH’s sovereign will, then why the ecstatic jubilation at the thought of his vanquishing them? Indeed, why must they be vanquished at all? Elsewhere in the same volume, Anderson argues that the expression YHWH mālāk should not be translated “YHWH is king” because “in contrast to Marduk’s and Baal’s dominion, [YHWH’s] kingship is not subject to the seasonal cycle of summer barrenness and fertility, of death and resurrection.”
