The child with Autism may appear to be in a world of their own and not seek out others to share an experience. Others may want to be sociable but don’t seem to understand how to do this. Children with Autism often attempt to make social contact and make friends but can get confused or rebuffed. This can lead to the child becoming isolated. It is important to find a balance between encouraging the child to participate in social situations and ensuring they don’t become anxious. Many children make friends with someone who has similar interests. Identifying children with similar interests and introducing them to each other or providing break time and lunchtime clubs where children can pursue their interests could be a good way for the pupil with Autism to become involved in a positive social situation.
