Chapter Nine

I sit in my bed and look at Max lying on his side facing me. His arm is thrown over his head, and I admire his chiseled chest with just the right amount of dark hair, and his forearms are perfect for holding just about any position. It’s been a few hours and we have made rabbits in spring look unqualified, which led to a much-needed nap.

It’s better than I could have hoped. We meet one another on the wild fantasy scale. But more than that, he has this sensitive side that I’ve seen a peek of. He lets me take the lead and kisses me in all those little places that guys forget are kisses to the soul. There is something near my heart dancing, but I can’t figure out what.

Max mumbles as his eyes begin to flutter open. He squints an eye and looks at me. “What are you doing?” It comes out drowsy.

“Just admiring my creature.”

His lips form a wry smile. “Your creature? Is that what I am?”

“I don’t know what you are, but that position in our last round was not human,” I tell him as I adjust my body to lying on my side and prop my head on my elbow.

“Come here, you,” he growls and pulls me close to him then kisses my forehead then the tip of my nose. “What’s the game plan for this evening? I need to take my contacts out before my eyes turn red.”

I wonder if this is the cue he’s trying to give that he wants to leave. In my mind, I was hoping he would want to stay and sleep here with me. Guys forget that women need that even if they say it’s only sex. But with Max, it isn’t just sex.

“Oh. Uhm. I guess you need to go home as you don’t have your glasses.”

Stupid me, I’m giving him an out.

“Trying to get rid of me? No, I have my glasses in the car. What I meant is do you want to order in some food? I need to set my alarm quite early, though, as I have to meet with a seller at 9am. Sorry to ruin your last days of summer vacation.”

A smile spreads on my face from relief that he wants to stay.

“Oh, it’s not a problem at all. And if this is what my last days of summer vacation look like, then I am not complaining,” I nearly purr before I kiss him on the lips.

Half an hour later, we have Chinese food at the kitchen counter and Max is back in his glasses. I am sitting in a long t-shirt and it doesn’t cover below my little boxer shorts, not even an inch.

We started talking about when tourist season dies off in Sage Creek, but it never does. Then we switched to talking about what we were like as teenagers.

“We threw a lot of parties. Lucas, Leo, and I did it at every chance we got. A shitload of pranks too.
