Chapter 5

Crash had just started to doze when Amber brought the wheelchair in. Sick to death of staring at the four walls, he was so grateful for the chance to get outside, he didn’t mind being woken. In fact, he’d willingly give up sleep for several days if he could get out of there for good.

“Wish I healed faster, so I could be mobile on my own by now.”

“Healing takes time, you just have to rest and let your body do the work.”

Crash sighed and pushed himself upright as she maneuvered the chair into place and locked the wheels. He flirted with her a little to keep things light. The last thing he wanted was for her to see how desperate he was to get out.

“Did your guy take you anywhere special for Valentine’s Day?” The holiday had passed last week, and while he’d had visitors, there was no one special he’d wanted to send anything to or see, except maybe Amber. But that would be considered inappropriate, at least as long as he was there and her patient.

“I’m not seeing anyone. I spent the evening curled up with a pint of ice cream, my pup and the remote, binging on action flicks.”

“Not romance?” He eased off the edge of the bed to his feet then into the chair as she hovered nearby, in case he had any problems. This was a new step. Until this morning, the staff had insisted on keeping at least on hand on him when he moved out of the bed. It was a step, but he was itching to be on his own again and such a small step rankled.

“I’m not a big fan of romance movies… I’ll read them, but prefer action or dramas when I’m watching.” She waited while he situated himself, then flipped down the foot rests and unlocked the wheels before stepping behind him and starting to push.

She kept chatting as they made their way through the halls to the small garden area enclosed, in the center of the building so the only way in was through one of the three doorways. It was better than being inside, but it left him feeling a bit claustrophobic.

“What kind of dog do you have?” Hope surged in his chest. He still had a couple weeks there, and flirting with her made the time a little easier. Now that he knew she wasn’t attached he even had a little hope when she laughed or seemed to flirt back.

It would be impossible while he was there, but maybe he could convince her to go out with him once he could walk on his own again and got out of there.

“He’s a mutt, but I love him.”

“Mutts are some of the best. You don’t need a pedigree or approved breeding to know how to love. I just wish more people realized that’s true about people too.”

She wheeled him to a stop beside a small round table then sat in one of the chairs surrounding it.

“You’re right.
