Anyway, these townspeople appear to have no souls,

it’s great! I’m pretty sure I’ve met my fair share of those!

I have a code name for them: I call them the Fish Eyes.

You know, the glassy stares, the gaping mouths . . . My parents

used to tell me: “Mark, what’s stupid is picking others

apart.” I guess the pod-people aren’t dumb, they just lack

emotions; still, you’d think Dr. Bennell would see through

the psycho-mumbo-jumbo the local shrink uses

to explain the weird “You’re not my mom!” phenomenon

overtaking the town: the shrink jabbers on about

mass hallucinations and hysteria, which is

funny because hysteria derives from the Greek

word hysterikós, meaning “suffering in the womb”—
