Chapter 6

Saturday came quicker than I had expected and it seemed, as though, when I woke up, the day had just suddenly sprung out of nowhere. I knew where Sam’s ranch was, because I had heard some of the other girls who had classes with him gossip about it. Apparently it was one of the most expensive properties in town, but that hadn’t bothered Sam, who was insanely rich after inheriting his dad’s vast fortune.

When I was ready or as ready, as I presumed I would ever be, I set off in the direction of the ranch. The outskirts of the town were beautiful with brightly painted, well-kept houses, which stood out against the horizon like something you might see on a postcard. The ranch was one of the last houses on the outskirts, before the land officially became outback.

I could see it from quite a distance away, as I turned onto the street, which it sat on. It was made out of dark red wood, which looked strong and alive with purpose. The windows were pained and had small white shutters on the outsides, which gave the whole ranch a whimsical look that I wondered whether Sam had chosen.

When I had walked up the long drive, which seemed to curl round the land, I knocked on the front door and waited for an answer. It can’t have been more than a few seconds that had passed, before I heard Sam’s footsteps getting closer to the door and then it was opening and all I could see was him.

“Well, hello darling.” Sam said, as he stepped to the side to let me in. He had a smile on his face, which was full of relief and I wondered whether he had been worried about whether or not I would show.

I walked into the large open space, which was hidden behind the door. “Hey.” I said, as I walked passed Sam and then turned around to face him. I could see from the corner of my eyes that the ranch was just as big on the inside, as it was on the out and I couldn’t help, but feel slightly impressed.

The place was decorated beautifully and everything seemed to have a place and a purpose. “Your place is lovely.” I said, as I waited for Sam to finish closing the door.

“Thanks” Sam said, as he turned around and flashed his smile at me again. I could feel little baby butterflies beginning to take flight in my stomach, as he kept the smile on his lips. I couldn’t help but wonder whether he knew what his smile did, or whether he was unaware of the weapons, which lived on his lips.

I followed Sam, as he walked through the living room and into the kitchen. The kitchen had a lovely rustic cottage feel to it, which seemed to fill me with inner warmth. I sat down on one of the stools, which were pushed underneath the breakfast bar and watched, as Sam reached into one of the cupboards and pulled out two glasses.
