Chapter 5

By the time morning came Marian felt more like herself again. The two headed out to work as normal, only this time in the same vehicle. The day went by as usual, chores then lunch and a stop by afterwards to check on Max at the townhome. But as the sun began to set behind the horizon and the two drew closer to the ranch, the familiar feeling of dread swept over the car like a cold silence.

Mac eyed her nervously, fearful of the unknown to come and what his mother and ex-girlfriend could be plotting. He took a hand from the steering wheel and placed in onto her thigh. Marian turned her gaze from outside the window and forced a smile. She knew he would do everything in his power to get through this, but was their love really enough? They had been challenged before and it had passed the test, but this was more than the two of them could possibly have fathomed.

The ranch was bright with the warm glow of lights as they pulled into the dusty driveway. Mac shut off the car, but remained in his seat a moment, staring blanking at the dash, clearly lost in a thought. He turned to Marian and pulled her across to his lips, kissing gently while caressing her neck.

“You know mother is going to make me take her into town tonight right?” He frowned. “Do you feel well enough to handle this?”

Marian nodded reluctantly. Yes she felt well enough to go, but she didn’t want to have to do it all. “Yes, but Mac?”

“Yes?” He looked nervously into her eyes.

“Don’t forget me please.” She nearly cried at the thought of a night out being ignored for that diva.

He laughed, “My love, I could never forget you. Let’s go get this over with.”

As expected, dinner was awkward and quiet, only the sounds of silverware clinking upon the plates and the shuffling of service staff could be heard. Finally, as expected, Mrs. Diamond insisted on Amber-Lynn being escorted out to town, for old time’s sake. And equally as anticipated was the plea to leave Marian at home, using her fainting spell as a likely excuse.

Marian could feel her disappointment when Mac refused to take her alone out to Sully’s, the old bar hang-out his group used to frequent. Marian had been there several times, but wasn’t fond of bars so this would be a doubly annoying night. After dinner the three headed for Mac’s car once more, Amber-Lynn pushing past her to grab the front seat. Marian scowled from the backside and Mac let out an obvious sigh of frustration. Amber pretended not to notice as they headed for town.

The bar was crowded for a Tuesday night, and it was fortunate they managed to find a booth. Mac sat with Marian, wrapping his muscular arm on the back of her seat and leaning back against the padding. A waitress headed their way and let out a squeal as she approached.
