CHAPTER 4

The morning sun was bright as Nick sat in his Jeep, parked at the motel entrance, unsure what he should do next…what he wanted to do next. There was a part of him that wanted to run as far and as fast as possible from the woman who believed him guilty, a headstrong, rather combative female he certainly didn’t want or need in his life.

Yet there was another part of him that remembered the unexpected fall of her softness against him, the slightly dizzying scent of lilacs and vanilla that emanated from her. That part of him recognized that she was a grieving woman whose eyes occasionally expressed a fragile vulnerability and a loneliness and grief that called to something deep inside him.

The interview the afternoon before with Dillon had gone the way Nick had expected. Dillon had asked tough questions about Nick’s relationship with Wendy and Nick had answered honestly.

A far as the timeline of Wendy’s disappearance, Nick surmised that he had been the last person to see her alive other than her killer.

He remembered that Wendy had come to the bunkhouse after work on that Friday night and they had carried lawn chairs down by the pond and had star-gazed and argued over the reality of space aliens.

The last things Nick had seen that night were the taillights of her car when she’d left around eleven.

Once the interview with Dillon was over Nick had eaten dinner with the rest of the cowboys, and then he’d gone to his bunk with memories of Wendy mingling with thoughts of Adrienne.

He and Adrienne hadn’t exactly parted on pleasant terms the day before. In fact, he’d hit a bit below the belt by repeating one of the things Wendy had said about her older sister.

He knew Adrienne was in her unit because her car was parked in front. It was after nine o’clock, so he assumed she was probably up and around.

They both wanted the same thing, for the killer to be caught. But maybe it was best if he left her to her own devices and just stayed out of her way.

“Oh, hell,” he muttered, and turned into the motel parking lot. He parked next to her car and got out of his Jeep. The worst that could happen would be she’d slam her door in his face.

He barely knocked when she opened the door. Her hair fell in loose waves below her shoulders, and her yellow blouse and crisp white capris gave her an impression of freshness that her slightly tired-looking eyes belied.

She opened the door to allow him inside, and before he was completely in, she sat at the table with her purse at her side. “I didn’t expect to see you here this morning.”

“I didn’t expect to be here until I was here,” he replied honestly. “May I?” He gestured to the chair across from hers. When she nodded, he sat. She looked at him expectantly above the screen of a laptop. At least she hadn’t narrowed her eyes yet, a sure sign of her displeasure.
