The bridges spanning the moat were all pulled down and some of the bricks and stone were transferred to the walls, but the majority was in fact diverted to reinforce the rubble and braces that were set against the insides of some of the gates in the inner wall. Food and livestock had already been brought into the city from outlying areas, the cows, pigs and sheep being corralled in the fields between the inner wall and where the city’s buildings began. The cows and goats would be used to produce milk and the chickens, eggs, before they were slaughtered to provide fresh meat. It was fortunate the emperor had few horsemen for the horses grazing near the Blachernae and Skanderbeg’s mounts nearby were small in number when compared to the cattle, but they too would be eaten if the siege was a long one.
