Lt. Gen. Sir Frederick Morgan. The photo was probably taken after D-Day. Note the SHAEF shoulder patch and the expeditionary setting. His deputy at COSSAC, Maj. Gen. Ray Barker, USA, said of Morgan, “Here was a man who above everything else was honest and straightforward.” Imperial War Museum (EA33078)

Topographical map of part of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Western Europe, the Balkans, and Turkey. The mountainous terrain of Italy and the Balkans is clearly shown, as is the Lombardy Plain in northern Italy, just south of the Alps. The proximity of the Pas-de-Calais to Dover is easy to see, as well as the greater distance to Normandy and the Cherbourg Peninsula to the west. To defend against invasion and in the absence of definitive intelligence, the Germans took the position that landings could occur anywhere from Norway to Denmark, across the North Sea toward the Dutch and Belgian coast, or along the coast of France from the Channel down to the Spanish border or to Mediterranean France.
