The next morning is tense between us as we eat breakfast. After I walked away last night, Owen didn’t come to bed. When I came downstairs, I saw messy blankets on the couch. He’d rather sleep there than come to bed with me. It hurts.

As we eat in silence, the only sound is the scraping of our forks on our plates. The sound hurts my ears, but I don’t complain. I don’t want to be accused of being more “annoying” than I already am.

Owen eats like he just discovered food. He scarfs it down and stands up before I can get a word in.

“Do you have work today?” I ask as he brings his plate to the sink. His back is to me, and it tenses when I speak.

“I don’t actually. We completed our mission last night. Today is a free day.” He turns to me. “Why do you ask?”

Good. He doesn’t sound completely mad at me. In fact, I detect a hint of hope in his voice. I know that sound well. I’ve heard it a lot in my own voice when talking to Owen.

“I know we had another fight last night. I’m still not sure how to feel about it.” I inhale, then roughly exhale. “But I don’t want things to remain tense between us. And it’s ok if you haven’t figured out what you’re feeling yet. I’m still sticking to what I said, though. But that doesn’t mean we can’t spend time together.”

“Did you have something in mind?”

“I thought we could go shopping. You did say I could buy some pillows or rugs to add some color to this place. It could be fun. Easy. Nothing more.”

Owen gazes at me for a moment. His dark eyes are so consuming. Finally, he nods. “Sounds like a plan to me.”

I don’t realize how tense my shoulders are until he says that and they relax. I smile. “Ok. Ok.” I say it more for myself than for him. A reassurance of sorts. Maybe this will be a step in the right direction for us.

I can only hope.
