Integrated Child Development Scheme

Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) is one of the world’s largest and pioneering programs in facilitating early childhood development in India. This centrally sponsored scheme was initiated in 1975, by the Government of India with a view to combat child hunger and malnutrition. Even at present, ICDS is a major driving force for addressing major issues of child health such as malnutrition, morbidity, reduced learning capacity and mortality, especially in rural, tribal and slum areas. The program not only provides educational and health services to the pre-school children in an integrated manner, but also ensures their proper growth and development. Anganwadi centres play an important role in providing ICDS services.

As many as 13.3 lakh Anganwadi and mini-Anganwadi Centres (AWCs/mini-AWCs) are operational out of 13.7 lakh sanctioned AWCs/mini-AWCs, as on 31 January 2013. These centres provide supplementary nutrition, non-formal pre-school education, nutrition and health education, immunization, health check-up and referral services, of which the later three services are provided in convergence with public health systems.

The objectives of the ICDS program, as listed by Ministry of Women and Child Development, GoI are to:improve the nutritional and health status of children in the age group 0–6 years;
