Chapter 20

Once again, Amanda and Travis took precautions upon leaving Darren Spencer’s apartment. Travis departed first, the cottage pictures he printed out folded neatly and placed inside his jacket. Again, he would use his skills to disappear into the background of the Pittsburgh streetscape and secretly monitor Amanda’s return to the parking garage. He would be looking for Darren, a face that had now been etched into Travis Walker’s mind from seeing all the images of him. There were the grainy photos of Darren and Amanda having sex, of course. But there were dozens of others of a more natural and normal Darren Spencer spending time with friends and family, and otherwise enjoying his life. What had put him on such a destructive path? More precisely, who had done this?

Sure, Darren’s attraction to Amanda was obvious and understandable. She was smart, beautiful and deliciously vulnerable in some mysterious way that is so irresistibly attractive in otherwise capable, competent and powerful women. The seeds of this attraction were sewn in the close working relationship Darren and Amanda shared. Its origins were perfectly natural, even healthy, and all but inevitable.

But somewhere along the line, Darren’s natural, healthy attraction mutated into ugly obsession. His one and only mission became obtaining Amanda. He captured her in digital bits with all the clandestine smartphone pictures he snapped of her at the office. And for one, brief, fleeting and transformative moment, Darren had held Amanda in a mutually willing embrace of love-making. But all the while, someone else was holding and manipulating Darren Spencer. Someone who recognized Darren’s unique hunger for Amanda and his unique position to entrap her in the web of sexual scandal. This was something that would taint her corporate standing at an ultra-crucial moment for her company, turning her into a professional pariah.

Yet, no one had counted upon the pure, passionate perfection of the moment Darren had shared with Amanda. Its elusive quality – something absolutely necessary for the plan to taint Amanda with the stain of a sexual harassment scandal with a subordinate -- only propelled Darren all the more to try and recapture it.

But doing so would prove as elusive as water through his fingers. Because Amanda had seen the strings of this puppet show, and now she had born witness to the ugly evidence this puppet master had gathered against her. All of these unalterable facts and unstoppable forces left a desperate Darren with precious few options.

He could stalk his prize, which Darren did only to encounter Amanda in another man’s embrace. And then, he could strike out at something even more near and dear to her – Amanda’s daughter.

Now, as this utterly predictable passion play neared its dénouement, Darren’s dwindling options had shrunk even further.
