GRANDMA HADN’T ATE A THING IN DAYS. CHUCK AND THE OTHERS tried but Grandma only said Let me be. She only would touch a pitcher of barley water. And the apples she buried in the mud. He asked how come Grandma wouldn’t eat anything. And why’d she go and bury apples like that?

Chuck and Rob said, Grandma’s just tired. She ain’t sleepin too good.

He said, But how come she won’t eat nothing?

That morning he got woke for Grandma was come into him and Linny’s room. Grandma set candles in the windows. She took a pinch of salt from a little black sack and put it on his head. She put some on Linny’s too. Grandma left. Linny brushed the salt out his hair. She’s fuckin crazy Linny said. But Linny was just mad Grandma wouldn’t take him to town for trick or treat.

After Grandma left he got up out the bed and ran downstairs. There was candles burned in all the windows. And a big fire in the fireplace. It was awful warm. Out front Grandma swept the porch with a broom of twigs. Grandma swept the air and her lips moved she was talking. He asked what Grandma did. And how come Grandma cried when they burnt the cornfield?

Grandma’s a sad case, Roxy said.

He said, But how come she’s sad?

Roxy just shrugged. Go look in her closet, Roxy said and brushed her hair.

After Chuck and everybody was gone to town for Halloween he found Grandma set down in her closet. Grandma’s room all smoky and her head bent over and showed the back of her neck. She was whispering. In Grandma’s closet was a little table. On it was lots of candles and a saucer of ash. There was pitchers of Ma in there too. Bunches of pitchers. Ma was pretty. Grandma didn’t have any pitchers of Pa.

Grandma? he said. Grandma turned slow. She stared from inside the closet. Her eyes was wet and her face was red.

Is Ma and Pa ever comin home? he said.

Git out a here, Grandma said. Git, damn you.
