Lean in to the absence

the littlest cousin spot empty.

My words come fast—a chant

a dance a sprinkling—before

camera reminds us again

like all crumpled fenders.

But my aunties step in

swing their fleshy hips

toward hope, hands deep

in candied pockets of memory.

Our breadloaf arms baked together

from years of his blue-plaid shirts

beside my lilac scoop neck sweetness.

But today Antell brown eyes

pose, spin another holy cycle.

We add a bundle of hickory thin children

their skin a parchment of piercings.

Our settled feet know: some will survive

some become the hole itself.

Their brown-toed hunger raw

as the scent of funeral flowers

suffocating in the closed-in room.

They arrange and rearrange, a shimmy

and giggle kaleidoscope of t-shirts,

vinyl slogans spilling witticisms—

words stacked like Lincoln logs

a fortress against solemnity.
