Chapter 12
Both men watched me with interest. I bit my lip, not liking the spotlight.
âWell, has anyone searched his classroom?â I asked.
Detective Prestonâs eyebrows flickered. âThatâs next on my list. You must be a mind reader. You want to tag along?â
I nodded. Why not? I might as well see this through.
âWhat about me?â Christopher asked, his voice whining. His head swiveled between the two of us.
My nails bit into my palms as I clenched my hands. Please tell him no. I didnât think I could hang around him another minute. Something about him made my skin crawl.
Luckily, the detective didnât let me down. âThis is official police business. Weâll keep in touch and let you know of anything we find,â he said, with a no-nonsense dip of his head.
Christopher seemed to wilt before us, but he didnât try to argue. We left him staring at the desk, with the detective giving a stern command that if Christoper should find anything, he needed to alert the police department at once, as it could be evidence for the murder investigation.
As I walked out to my van, I couldnât help but glance over at Terry Brooksâ place. The driveway was empty and the windows dark with Emily gone. I checked out the tree. Detective Preston joined me.
âHard to believe this would be at the center of all that,â he said. âShame how depraved people can be.â
I nodded, stuffing my hands into my jacketâs pockets. It was cold, with that icy touch to the breeze that threatened a snowfall.
Detective Preston must have felt it too. He rubbed his hands together. âAll right, quit dawdling. Letâs get going.â
Dawdling, huh? I bit back my retort and got into the van.
The trip to the school was uneventful to the outside eye, but my stomach clenched. I wasnât sure if I was about to be a part of solving one of the greatest historical mysteries of the American Revolution: finding George Washingtonâs saddle pistols.
Would this be enough to prove there could have been other suspects besides Terry? Could Terry walk free even though he was the one who pulled the musket trigger? Or was my entire idea about to go down the drain?
The schoolâs parking lot was overflowing from all of the studentsâ cars. I drove around back to where I remembered the teachers had their own spots.
Detective Preston didnât follow me, choosing instead to park in front of the entrance. By the time I had my van parked, and was hurrying up the sidewalk to meet him, he already had a crowd of kids gathered around his vehicle, interested to see why he was here.
As I approached, I heard him saying, âWhy arenât you guys in class? No, thereâs nothing happening here that concerns any of you. Hey! You! Donât be touching my car, or you better believe it will concern you.â
Mrs. Matthews, the principal, walked out. âAll right, everyone. Excitementâs over. Get back to class.â She waited with her arms crossed until the last of the stragglers was through the door, then she stepped closer to the detective.
